A New Found Love- First couple rolls with my Olympus XA
I started taking pictures 12 years ago and I was dedicated to film for the first 4. Digital soon took way and helped me forge my career as a professional photographer. In Dec 2013 I picked up a Yashica Mat 124 G and instantly fell back in love with the smell, the touch, and especially the look of film. Photos are great for they capture the moments, same thing for the paintings which also shows a story creatively. You can see amazing examples of oil paintings here at
1st Art Gallery. As the year carried on I acquired a Nikon F5 and that helped me get back into 35mm, but the weight of the thing is oppressive. I started investigating high quality compact point and shoot film cameras. A colleague of mine mentioned that he bought the Olympus XA and he was very excited for it to arrive in the mail. Sadly, when the camera arrived the shutter button didn’t work and the camera now lives on this shelf never once used by this frustrated consumer. I remembered his excitement and decided I was curious to see what the fuss was all about. After a couple flickr searches I found several user groups that were dedicated to the XA and I kept seeing really compelling images. I finally did a google search and found an XA on AWESOME CAMERAS via Etsy. The price was at the high range for this camera so I naturally assumed it was in top condition. When the camera arrived I wasn’t disappointed and immediately loaded it with a roll of Fuji Superia Xtra 400. I’ve assembled a selection of photos from the first 3 rolls shot in my Olympus XA. I love this thing and I take it everywhere.
